Fractional CMO Leadership for Growth-Stage Businesses

A CMO's brain without a CMO's salary. Senior strategy and team direction for businesses that have outgrown running marketing by committee.

The short answer

What is Fractional CMO Leadership for Growth-Stage Businesses, and how does MOGDX run it?

A fractional CMO is senior marketing leadership on a part-time basis. You get the strategy, the direction, and the accountability of a chief marketing officer without the salary, the equity, or the full-time commitment. At MOGDX this is led by Sheila Rondeau, who has spent 30+ years building brands including VitaminWater, Toyota, CVS, and Kellogg's.

The Problem

Real revenue, a small marketing team, and nobody senior at the executive table. So the team executes without direction. A coordinator or a junior marketer ends up making decisions that belong two levels above them, not because they are not capable but because nobody else is making them.

The symptoms are consistent across every business we see in this position. Channels get chosen by whoever pitched most recently. Budget gets set at last year's number plus a bit. Three vendors each optimize their own slice and nobody owns the whole picture. And when the quarter misses, there is no single person accountable for marketing as a function.

Hiring a full-time CMO solves it and costs a great deal, more than most businesses between two and fifteen million in revenue can justify for a role they need two days a week.

What's included

  • Marketing strategy plus annual and quarterly planning
  • Team leadership and direction
  • Vendor and agency management, including holding them to a standard
  • Budget allocation and channel decisions
  • Hiring input for marketing roles
  • Executive and board-level reporting
  • KPI ownership and accountability for growth
  • A standing presence in your leadership meetings
  • Judgment and escalation when something breaks

Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits if

  • You are somewhere around two to fifteen million in revenue
  • You have a marketing team of roughly one to five people
  • You are spending real money without senior oversight of where it goes
  • You have multiple vendors and nobody coordinating them
  • You have a board or partners asking questions your marketing team cannot answer
  • You are preparing to scale, enter a new market, or raise

This is not the right fit if

  • You want an executor rather than a leader. That is Done For You, and it is a better fit and a lower cost.
  • You do not yet have a team or a budget to direct. Start with strategy and a system, then add leadership when there is something to lead.
  • You want a senior name on the website without giving them real authority. That does not work and we will not do it.

How engagements are structured

This is one of the three MOGDX engagement levels rather than a service purchased alongside them. It is typically structured as a set number of days per month focused on senior strategy and leadership rather than production work. It frequently begins after a Do It With You or Done For You engagement, once the system exists and what it needs is direction. Cost tracks days per month, the size of the team being led, and the number of outside vendors being managed.

Do It With You

Often the entry point. We build the plan and the system with you, then step up into leadership once there is something to lead.

Done For You

The other common entry point. We run execution first, then take the CMO seat as the engagement matures.

Fractional CMO

Standing leadership on a set number of days per month, focused on senior strategy, team direction, vendor management, and executive reporting.

Your first 30, 60, and 90 days

Days 1 to 30

Assess

Team, spend, channels, vendors, data, and pipeline. We interview across sales and leadership, not just marketing, because marketing's problems usually show up first in the sales conversation. You get an honest read on what is working, who is capable of what, and where money is going without a return.

Days 31 to 60

Set the plan

Strategy, budget allocation, channel decisions, KPIs, and the reporting rhythm. This phase decides what stops as clearly as what starts, and stopping is the harder half. Most marketing budgets have at least one line item nobody has defended in two years.

Days 61 to 90

Lead the team and report

We run the cadence. Internal people and outside vendors get directed against one plan instead of five. You get reporting in language that works in a leadership or board meeting rather than a dashboard nobody reads.

What you get

Senior marketing leadership guiding the whole engine.

Common mistakes we see

  1. Hiring a fractional CMO without giving real authority

A leader who cannot direct the team or cut a vendor is a consultant with a better title.

  2. Expecting the strategist to also be the executor

If they are building the emails, they are not leading. Both are legitimate needs and they are different roles.

  3. Bringing one in with no team and no budget

There is nothing to lead yet. Build the system first and add leadership when it has something to direct.

  4. Measuring by activity

Judge by whether the plan is clear, the team knows their part, the vendors are accountable, and the numbers move.

  5. Treating it as temporary from day one

The value compounds as the relationship deepens. Our own longest fractional engagement started as a three-month agreement and is currently in month 23.

How this connects to the rest of the system

Fractional leadership sits above the other services rather than beside them. It usually starts with the same work described in digital strategy, then takes ownership of the plan quarter after quarter rather than delivering it once. The execution layer underneath it is marketing systems and automation and websites and funnels.

The ongoing channels are content and campaigns and reputation and reviews. If you are not sure whether you need leadership or execution, the services overview lays out all three engagement levels side by side.
